Whiskey and Me

scotch whisky whiskeyI wasn’t looking for something new, but it must have been evident to my friend that I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the status quo. In fact, the lack of consistency in the company I was keeping was probably what triggered Jeff to set me up on a blind date.

As I dug into the plate of  French fries in front of me (a choice I was entirely consistent about)), Jeff slid a glass my way. Tired of waiting for me to select a drink, he had made a decision for me. “It’s scotch. Try it.” he said. I protested that I had tried scotch before and only liked it when mixed with other things and… “You’ve been doing it wrong. Drink.”

So, I drank, and I saw that it was good. Jeff introduced me to single-malt scotch that night. It was Dalwhinnie and I was in love.

A couple of nights later I was back at my spot across the bar from Jeff, eager to deepen my new relationship. I ordered a Dalwhinnie, again, relying on Jeff to know how to deliver it, because I still didn’t have the terminology down. I didn’t know there was terminology. After one sip, I berated Jeff. “This isn’t the same! What did you do differently?” He pointed out that I was not currently elbow-deep in my usual plate of French fries, as I had been the first time.  And, my education began.

My bartender friend Jeff opened the door to what has become a passion for me. My current pursuit of whisky/whiskey nerdery started with the Speyside Dalwhinnie and moved on to a deep love of islays (Lagavulin is my favorite) and branched into an exploration of whiskeys of all kinds. When I travel, I look for local distilleries and almost always come home toting several pounds of brown liquor as souvenirs.

When I travel, I look for local distilleries and almost always come home toting several pounds of brown liquor as souvenirs. I listen to podcasts, subscribe to newsletters, and read books about whiskey. I search for opportunities to mix my business (marketing) with my passion for the subject of whiskey and seize any chance to talk about the stuff with other geeks.

My love for the stuff has even brought me back here: to writing. This blog will chronicle my path to becoming the biggest whiskey nerd I can be.
